LOCATION
This neighbourhood covers a small section of the old City of Dundas,
east of the border created by Sydenham Road to Hatt Street to Main
Street as far as Spencer Creek and west of East Street. This neighbourhood
also includes the north eastern section of the old City of Flamborough
east of Highway 6 and the section east of Middletown Road and south
of Highway 5, Moxley Road, and Concession Road 4. Some of the smaller
villages included are Mountsberg, Carlisle, Waterdown and Greensville.
This neighbourhood is defined by census tracts 132, 140.01, 140.02,
141 and 144.

Population
In 2001 Beverly Hills 3 had a total population of 29,232 people,
an increase of 14.2% since 1996. In 2001 the neighbourhood’s
population was composed of 49.4% males and 50.6% females. Beverly
Hills 3 had proportionally more children under 15 years of age and
adults ages 30 to 49 with fewer young adults aged 20 to 29 than
Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
1a). The proportion of individuals 65 years of age and over
was slightly lower than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
1b). A full population pyramid by age and sex for Beverly Hills
3 is shown in Figure 1c.
Marital Status and Families
In 2001 more people aged 15 years and over were married in Beverly
Hills 3 (62.3%) than in Hamilton (51.7%) and Ontario (53.4%) (Figure
2a). There were fewer lone parent families in Beverly Hills
3 (9.3%) than in Hamilton (16.6%) and Ontario (15.2%). Fewer seniors
aged 65 years and over lived alone (25.0%) than in Hamilton (28.9%)
and Ontario (26.8%). Beverly Hills 3 had bigger households than
Hamilton and Ontario with 33.4% having four or more people and only
17.7% having just one person (Figure
2b).
Households and Dwellings
There were more owned and fewer rented dwellings in Beverly Hills
3 than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
3a). Beverly Hills 3 had dwellings of all ages with 29.7% built
prior to 1961 and 15.5% built between 1996 and 2001. There were
more single-detached houses and fewer apartments and row houses
in Beverly Hills 3 than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
3b).
Education
The level of education in Beverly Hills 3 was higher than in Hamilton
and Ontario. Less-than-grade-9 was the highest level of education
for only 3.9% of the population 20 years and older, compared to
10.3% in Hamilton and 8.7% in Ontario (Figure
4a). The proportion of people aged 15 to 24 years in Beverly
Hills 3 who were not attending school was 37.1% - slightly lower
than in Hamilton (38.1%) and slightly higher than in Ontario (35.1%).
Employment and Income
In Beverly Hills 3 the proportion of people aged 15 and over who
were in the labour force (working or available to work) was higher
(73.4%) than in Hamilton (63.7%) and Ontario (67.3%). In 2001 Beverly
Hills 3 had a much lower unemployment rate (2.8%) than Hamilton
(6.4%) and Ontario (6.1%). The top 4 male and female occupations
are listed in Table
1. The proportion of people with low income was much lower in
Beverly Hills 3 (6.1%) than in Hamilton (19.8%) and Ontario (14.4%)
(Figure 5a). Most areas of
Hamilton, including Beverly Hills 3, experienced a decrease in low
income since 1996. The average household income in Beverly Hills
3 was $83,300 in 2000, much higher than in Hamilton ($57,700) and
Ontario ($66,800). In Beverly Hills 3, 83.2% of income came from
employment while 6.4% came from government transfers. The proportions
of income from employment and government transfers were 77.1% and
12.1%, respectively, for Hamilton and 78.7% and 9.8%, respectively,
for Ontario.
Unpaid Work
Compared to Hamilton and Ontario, more people aged 15 years and
over in Beverly Hills 3 provided unpaid childcare (Figure
6a). A greater proportion of people provided care or assistance
to seniors compared to Hamilton and Ontario.
Immigration and Language
In Beverly Hills 3, 2.4% of people had a citizenship other than
Canadian, compared with 6.0% in Hamilton and 7.6% in Ontario. Immigrants
made up 15.2% of residents in Beverly Hills 3, with 35.9% of immigrants
born in the United Kingdom, the most common place of birth outside
Canada. In Hamilton and Ontario 24.7% and 26.8% of residents were
immigrants, with the United Kingdom again being the most common
place of birth outside Canada. 1.0% of people in Beverly Hills 3
spoke a home language other than English or French, which was much
lower than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
7a). French (0.2%) was the most common home language other than
English in Beverly Hills 3. Only 0.4% of the residents could not
conduct a conversation in an official language (English or French)
compared to 1.8% in Hamilton and 2.1% in Ontario.
Disability
In 2001 9.5% of people in Beverly Hills 3 reported difficulties
hearing, seeing, communicating, walking, climbing stairs, bending,
learning or doing similar activities. 10.8% of people reported that
a physical condition, mental condition or health problem reduced
the amount or kind of activity they could do. The percentage reporting
one or both of the above disabilities was 12.8%. These rates were
lower than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
8a).
HEALTH CARE UTILIZATION
Hospital Admissions and Emergency
Room Visits
In 2001 and 2002, Beverly Hills 3 residents were admitted to hospital
at a rate of 84.8 per 1,000 population, lower than in Hamilton as
a whole (93.3) (Table 2). Beverly
Hills 3 had lower rates than Hamilton for most disease groupings,
except for a higher rate of admission for osteoarthrosis and allied
disorders. The rate of emergency room visits was lower in Beverly
Hills 3 than in Hamilton and Beverly Hills 3 residents had a lower
rate of expected acute home care days per 1,000 population than
residents of Hamilton as a whole.
Community Care Access Centre (CCAC)
Services
In the fiscal year 2003-2004, the number of CCAC clients per 1,000
population in Beverly Hills 3 was 29.8, lower than in Hamilton as
a whole (34.7) (Table 3). When
standardized by age and sex to the Hamilton population, the rate
for Beverly Hills 3 became 34.7, equal to the Hamilton rate. Most
services were used at a lower rate in Beverly Hills 3 than in Hamilton,
even when standardized, except for Speech and Physiotherapy, which
were used at higher rates.
