LOCATION
This neighbourhood covers much of the old City of Dundas, west
of the border created by Sydenham Road to Hatt Street to Main Street
as far as Spencer Creek and east of East Street. This neighbourhood
also includes the western section of the old City of Flamborough
west of Highway 6. Some of the smaller villages included are Freelton,
Strabane, Millgrove, Valens, Kirkwall, Westover, Sheffield, Rockton,
Troy, Lynden, Copetown and Jerseyville (north of Jerseyville Road).
This neighbourhood is defined by census tracts 121, 122.01, 122.02,
130.02, 130.03, 131, 133, 142.01, 142.02 and 143.

Population
In 2001 Beverly Hills 4 had a total population of 43,991 people,
an increase of 7.0% since 1996. In 2001 the neighbourhood’s
population was composed of 49.2% males and 50.8% females. Beverly
Hills 4 had proportionally more children aged 5 to 19 years and
adults aged 40 to 64 years with fewer adults aged 20 to 39 than
Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
1a). The proportion of individuals 65 years of age and over
was similar to Hamilton and Ontario, with a slightly higher proportion
of individuals 85 years of age and over (Figure
1b). A full population pyramid by age and sex for Beverly Hills
4 is shown in Figure 1c.
Marital Status and Families
In 2001 more people aged 15 and over were married in Beverly Hills
4 (59.9%) than in Hamilton (51.7%) and Ontario (53.4%) (Figure
2a). There were fewer lone parent families in Beverly Hills
4 (10.8%) than in Hamilton (16.6%) and Ontario (15.2%). Fewer seniors
aged 65 years and over lived alone (20.6%) than in Hamilton (28.9%)
and Ontario (26.8%). Beverly Hills 4 had bigger households than
Hamilton and Ontario with 32.9% having four or more people and only
16.6% having just one person (Figure
2b).
Households and Dwellings
There were more owned and fewer rented dwellings in Beverly Hills
4 than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
3a). Beverly Hills 4 has dwellings of all ages with 35.6% built
before 1961 and 19.9% built between 1981 and 1990. There were more
single detached dwellings and fewer apartment buildings in Beverly
Hills 4 than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
3b).
Education
The level of education in Beverly Hills 4 was higher than in Hamilton
and Ontario. Less-than-grade-9 was the highest level of education
for only 4.0% of the population 20 years and older compared to 10.3%
in Hamilton and 8.7% in Ontario (Figure
4a). In addition, 33.5% had a least some university education
which was much higher than in Hamilton and Ontario. The proportion
of people aged 15 to 24 years in Beverly Hills 4 who were not attending
school was 28.8% - lower than in Hamilton (38.1%) and Ontario (35.1%).
Employment and Income
In Beverly Hills 4 a higher proportion of people aged 15 and over
(69.5%) were in the labour force (working or available to work)
than in Hamilton (63.7%) and Ontario (67.3%). In 2001 Beverly Hills
4 had a lower unemployment rate (4.0%) than Hamilton (6.4%) and
Ontario (6.1%). The top 4 male and female occupations are listed
in Table 1. The prevalence
of low income for all persons in private households was much lower
in Beverly Hills 4 (6.8%) than in Hamilton (19.8%) and Ontario (14.4%)
(Figure 5a).
Most areas of Hamilton, including Beverly Hills 4, experienced a
decrease in low income since 1996. The average household income
in Beverly Hills 4 was $82,900 in 2000, much higher than Hamilton
($57,700) and Ontario ($66,800). In Beverly Hills 4, 79.9% of income
came from employment while 7.2% came from government transfers.
The proportions of income from employment and government transfers
were 77.1% and 12.1%, respectively, for Hamilton and 78.7% and 9.8%,
respectively, for Ontario.
Unpaid Work
Compared to Hamilton and Ontario, more people aged 15 years and
over in Beverly Hills 4 provided unpaid childcare (Figure
6a). A higher proportion of people provided care or assistance
to seniors compared to Hamilton and Ontario.
Immigration and Language
In Beverly Hills 4, 3.1% of people had a citizenship other than
Canadian, compared with 6.0% in Hamilton and 7.6% in Ontario. Immigrants
made up 17.1% of residents in Beverly Hills 4 with 30.2% of immigrants
born in the United Kingdom, the most common place of birth outside
of Canada. In Hamilton and Ontario, 26.3% and 26.9% of residents
were immigrants with the United Kingdom being the most common place
of birth. 1.1% of people in Beverly Hills 4 spoke a home language
other than English or French, which was much lower than in Hamilton
and Ontario (Figure 7a).
French (0.3%) was the most common home language other than English
in Beverly Hills 4. 0.3% of the residents could not conduct a conversation
in an official language (English or French) compared to 1.8% in
Hamilton and 2.1% in Ontario.
Disability
In 2001 11.2% of people in Beverly Hills 4 reported difficulties
hearing, seeing, communicating, walking, climbing stairs, bending,
learning or doing similar activities. 12.6% of people reported that
a physical condition, mental condition or health problem reduced
the amount or kind of activity they could do. The percentage reporting
one or both of the above disabilities was 14.7%. These rates were
lower than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
8a).
HEALTH CARE UTILIZATION
Hospital Admissions and Emergency
Room Visits
In 2001 and 2002, Beverly Hills 4 residents were admitted to hospital
at a rate of 76.6 per 1,000 population, lower than in Hamilton as
a whole (93.3) (Table 2). Beverly
Hills 4 had lower rates than Hamilton for all disease groupings
except for an equal rate of pneumonia and a higher rate of osteoarthosis
and allied disorders. The rates of emergency room visits and admissions
were lower in Beverly Hills 4 than in Hamilton and Ontario. Beverly
Hills 4 had a lower rate of expected acute home care days per 1,000
population.
Community Care Access Centre (CCAC)
Services
In the fiscal year 2003-2004, the number of CCAC clients per 1,000
residents in Beverly Hills 4 was 32.1, similar to Hamilton as a
whole (34.7) (Table 3). When
standardized by age and sex to the Hamilton population, the rate
for Beverly Hills 4 dropped to 30.8 per 1,000. Even with slightly
fewer clients per 1,000 residents, there were higher rates of Nutrition,
Speech, and Physiotherapy visits in Beverly Hills 4 than in Hamilton
as a whole.

HIGHLIGHTS
