LOCATION
This neighbourhood is a section of the west Hamilton mountain.
It includes the smaller Hamilton City Planning and Development Department
neighbourhoods of Westcliffe East, Gilbert, Mohawk, Buchanan, Rolston,
Southham, Bonnington, Yeoville, Centremount, Balfour, Greeningdon
and Bruleville. Centremount 9 is defined by census tracts 3.03,
3.04, 4.01, 4.02, 11-14, 18 and 19. The border of this neighbourhood
follows Upper Paradise Road south from the escarpment to the Lincoln
M. Alexander Parkway, east to Upper Wentworth Street, north to Mohawk
Road, west to Upper Wellington Street and north back to the escarpment.

Population
In 2001 Centremount 9 had a total population of 30,348 people,
which was a decrease of 1.1% since 1996. In 2001 the neighbourhood’s
population was composed of 48.0% males and 52.0% females. Centremount
9 had a fairly similar age distribution to Hamilton and Ontario
(Figure 1a),
except for a higher proportion of individuals aged 60 to 84 years
(Figure 1b).

Marital Status and Families
In 2001 54.4% of the Centremount 9 population aged 15 years and
over were married compared to 51.7% in Hamilton and 53.4% in Ontario
(Figure 2a).
The percentage of lone parent families in Centremount 9 (17.7%)
was slightly higher than in Hamilton (16.6%) and Ontario (15.2%).
Fewer seniors aged 65 years and over lived alone in Centremount
9 (21.5%) compared to Hamilton (28.9%) and Ontario (26.8%). Centremount
9 had more households with 2 members (36.2%) than Hamilton and Ontario
(Figure 2b).
Households and Dwellings
There were more owned and fewer rented private dwellings in Centremount
9 than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
3a). Many more dwellings in Centremount 9 (65.0%) were built
between 1946 and 1970 compared to Hamilton (39.5%) and Ontario (32.5%).
There were more single-detached houses in Centremount 9 than in
Hamilton and Ontario and fewer apartment buildings (Figure
3b).
Education
The level of education in Centremount 9 was similar to Hamilton
and Ontario. Less-than-grade-9 was the highest level of education
for 11.8% of the population 20 years and older, compared to 10.3%
in Hamilton and 8.7% in Ontario (Figure
4a). The proportion of people aged 15 to 24 years in Centremount
9 who were not attending school was 38.3%, similar to Hamilton (38.1%)
and slightly higher than Ontario (35.1%).
Employment and Income
In Centremount 9 a lower proportion of people aged 15 and over
(57.3%) were in the labour force (working or available to work)
than in Hamilton (63.7%) and Ontario (67.3%). In 2001 Centremount
9 had a similar unemployment rate (6.3%) to Hamilton (6.4%) and
Ontario (6.1%). The top 4 male and female occupations are listed
in Table 1.
The prevalence of low income for all persons in private households
was higher in Centremount 9 (20.2%) than in Hamilton (19.8%) and
Ontario (14.4%) (Figure 5a).
Most areas of Hamilton, including Centremount 9, experienced a decrease
in low income since 1996. The average household income in Centremount
9 was $55,400 in 2000, slightly lower than in Hamilton ($57,700)
and Ontario ($66,800). In Centremount 9, 68.7% of income came from
employment while 15.9% came from government transfers. The proportions
of income from employment and government transfers were 77.1% and
12.1%, respectively, for Hamilton and 78.7% and 9.8%, respectively,
for Ontario.
Unpaid Work
Compared to Hamilton and Ontario, similar proportions of people
aged 15 years and over in Centremount 9 provided unpaid childcare
(Figure 6a). A slightly greater
proportion of people provided care or assistance to seniors than
in Hamilton and Ontario.
Immigration and Language
In Centremount 9, 5.8% of people had a citizenship other than Canadian,
compared with 6.0% in Hamilton and 7.6% in Ontario. Immigrants made
up 27.7% of residents in Centremount 9 with 19.4% of immigrants
born in Italy and 17.2% born in the United Kingdom, the most common
places of birth outside Canada. In Hamilton and Ontario, 24.7% and
26.8% of residents were immigrants with the United Kingdom being
the most common place of birth outside Canada. 7.2% of people in
Centremount 9 spoke a home language other than English or French,
which was similar to Hamilton and slightly lower than Ontario (Figure
7a). Italian (2.1%) was the most common home language other
than English in Centremount 9. 1.4% of residents could not conduct
a conversation in an official language (English or French) compared
to 1.8% in Hamilton and 2.1% in Ontario.
Disability
In 2001 17.1% of people in Centremount 9 reported difficulties
hearing, seeing, communicating, walking, climbing stairs, bending,
learning or doing similar activities. 19.1% of people reported that
a physical condition, mental condition or health problem reduced
the amount or kind of activity they could do. The percent reporting
one or both of the above disabilities was 21.9%. These rates were
higher than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
8a).
HEALTH CARE UTILIZATION
Hospital Admissions and Emergency
Room Visits
In 2001 and 2002, Centremount 9 residents were admitted to hospital
at a rate of 96.1 per 1,000 population, which was higher than in
Hamilton as a whole (93.3) (Table
2). Centremount 9 had substantially higher rates of admissions
for osteoarthrosis and allied disorders and rehabilitation than
Hamilton but a substantially lower rate of diabetes admissions.
Centremount 9 residents had lower rates of emergency room visits
and admissions and higher expected acute home care days per 1,000
population than all Hamilton residents.
Community Care Access Centre (CCAC)
Services
In the fiscal year 2003-2004, the number of CCAC clients per 1,000
population in Centremount 9 was 34.8, almost equal to Hamilton as
a whole (34.7) (Table 3). When
standardized by age and sex to the Hamilton population, the rate
for Centremount 9 was lower than Hamilton at 32.1 per 1,000. The
use of individual CCAC services per 1,000 population was lower in
Centremount 9 than in the entire City of Hamilton, except for Shift
Nursing Hours and Speech Visits which were used at a higher rate.
