LOCATION
This neighbourhood covers a south eastern section of the old City
of Hamilton below the escarpment and a south western section of
the old City of Stoney Creek below the escarpment. It includes the
smaller Hamilton City Planning and Development Department neighbourhoods
of Kentley, Corman, Greenford, Vincent and Gershome in the old City
of Hamilton. The neighbourhoods of Battlefield, Corman and Stoney
Creek in the old City of Stoney Creek are also included. Eastdale
2 is defined by census tracts 26.01-26.04, 26.06, 72.02, 82, 83
and 84.02. The border of Eastdale 2 follows the Red Hill Creek from
Barton Street south to King Street, east to just past Mount Albion
Road, south to the top of the escarpment, east to Centennial Parkway,
north to King Street, east to Gray’s Road, south to the escarpment,
east to Green Road, north to Highway 8, west along Highway 8 to
the border between the old cities of Hamilton and Stoney Creek (just
north of Queenston Road) to Centennial Parkway, north to Barton
Street, and west back to the Red Hill Creek.

Population
In 2001 Eastdale 2 had a total population of 28,261 people, a decrease
of 1.1% since 1996. In 2001 the neighbourhood’s population
was composed of 47.7% males and 52.3% females. Eastdale 2 had an
older population than Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
1a). The proportions of people in age categories below 50 were
generally lower than in Hamilton and Ontario, while the proportions
of people in age categories above 55 years were higher except in
the 85 and over age group (Figure
1b). A full population pyramid by age and sex for Eastdale 2
is shown in Figure 1c.
Marital Status and Families
In 2001 53.1% of the Eastdale 2 population aged 15 years and over
were married, similar to Hamilton (51.7%) and Ontario (53.4%) (Figure
2a). There were more lone parent families in Eastdale 2 (18.0%)
than in Hamilton (16.6%) and Ontario (15.2%). More seniors aged
65 years and over lived alone (29.5%) than in Hamilton (28.9%) and
Ontario (26.8%). Eastdale 2 had more single person households (28.1%)
than Hamilton and Ontario and fewer households (23.0%) with 4 or
more members (Figure 2b).
Households and Dwellings
There were fewer owned private dwellings in Eastdale 2 than in
Hamilton and Ontario and more rented (Figure
3a). Most dwellings in Eastdale 2 (82.0%) were built between
1946 and 1980 compared to 55.5% for Hamilton and 51.4% for Ontario.
There were fewer single-detached houses and more apartment buildings
and row houses in Eastdale 2 than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
3b).
Education
The level of education in Eastdale 2 was slightly lower than in
Hamilton and Ontario. Less-than-grade-9 was the highest level of
education for 14.0% of the population 20 years and older, compared
to 10.3% in Hamilton and 8.7% in Ontario (Figure
4a). The proportion of people aged 15 to 24 years in Eastdale
2 who were not attending school was 38.6% - about the same as in
Hamilton (38.1%) and slightly higher than in Ontario (35.1%).
Employment and Income
In Eastdale 2 the proportion of people aged 15 and over (57.8%)
who were in the labour force (working or available to work) was
lower than in Hamilton (63.7%) and Ontario (67.3%). In 2001 Eastdale
2 had a higher unemployment rate (8.1%) than Hamilton (6.4%) and
Ontario (6.1%). The top 4 male and female occupations are listed
in Table 1.
The proportion of people with low income was higher in Eastdale
2 (23.4%) than in Hamilton (19.8%) and Ontario (14.4%) (Figure
5a). Most areas of Hamilton, including Eastdale 2, experienced
a decrease in low income since 1996. The average household income
in Eastdale 2 was $49,700 in 2000, lower than Hamilton ($57,700)
and Ontario ($66,800). In Eastdale 2, 72.2% of income came from
employment and 16.8% came from government transfers, while the proportions
of income from employment and government transfers were 77.1% and
12.1%, respectively, for Hamilton and 78.7% and 9.8%, respectively,
for Ontario.
Unpaid Work
Compared to Hamilton and Ontario, fewer people aged 15 years and
over in Eastdale 2 provided unpaid childcare (Figure
6a). A smaller proportion of people provided care or assistance
to seniors compared to Hamilton and Ontario.
Immigration and Language
In Eastdale 2, 9.2% of people had a citizenship other than Canadian,
compared with 6.0% in Hamilton and 7.6% in Ontario. Immigrants made
up 36.0% of residents in Eastdale 2, with 15.8% of immigrants born
in Italy and 15.3% born in Yugoslavia, the most common places of
birth outside Canada. In Hamilton and Ontario, 24.7% and 26.8% of
residents were immigrants, with the United Kingdom being the most
common place of birth outside Canada. 12.5% of people in Eastdale
2 spoke a home language other than English or French, which was
higher than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
7a). Serbian (3.1%) and Italian (2.0%) were the two most common
home languages other than English in Eastdale 2. 3.4% of the residents
could not conduct a conversation in an official language (English
or French) compared to only 1.8% in Hamilton and 2.1% in Ontario.
Disability
In 2001 18.6% of people in Eastdale 2 reported difficulties hearing,
seeing, communicating, walking, climbing stairs, bending, learning
or doing similar activities. 20.5% of people reported that a physical
condition, mental condition or health problem reduced the amount
or kind of activity they could do. The percentage reporting one
or both of the above disabilities was 23.5%. These rates were higher
than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
8a).
HEALTH CARE UTILIZATION
Hospital Admissions and Emergency
Room Visits
In 2001 and 2002, Eastdale 2 residents were admitted to hospital
at a rate of 93.1 per 1,000 population, similar to Hamilton as a
whole (93.3) (Table 2). Eastdale
2 had higher rates of osteoarthrosis and allied disorders, rehabilitation
care, and circulatory disorders admissions than Hamilton. The rate
of emergency room visits was higher in Eastdale 2 than in Hamilton.
Eastdale 2 residents had a higher rate of expected acute home care
days per 1,000 population than residents of Hamilton as a whole.
Community Care Access Centre (CCAC)
Services
In the fiscal year 2003-2004, the number of CCAC clients per 1,000
population in Eastdale 2 was 37.5, slightly higher than in Hamilton
as a whole (34.7) (Table 3).
When standardized by age and sex to the Hamilton population, the
rate for Eastdale 2 becomes almost identical to the Hamilton rate.
Most services were used at a lower rate in Eastdale 2 than in Hamilton,
even when standardized. The exceptions were Personal Support and
Homemaking Hours and Speech Visits that were used at a higher rate.
