LOCATION

This neighbourhood includes the south-western section of the old City of Hamilton, the southern section of the old Town of Ancaster and the western section of the old Town of Glanbrook. The smaller Hamilton City Planning and Development Department neighbourhoods of Gurnett, Gilkson, Gourley, Kernighan, Jerome, Crear, Falkirk, Sheldon, Mewburn, Ryckmans, Barnstown, Carpenter and Kennedy in the old City of Hamilton are included as well as the Meadowlands of Ancaster. Fessenden 7 is defined by census tracts 1.04, 1.05, 2.01-2.04, 101 and 120. The border of this neighbourhood follows Trinity Church Road north to the border between the old City of Hamilton and the Town of Glanbrook, west to Upper James Street, north to Rymal Road, east to Upper Wentworth Street, north to the Lincoln M. Alexander Parkway, west to Golf Links Road, to Highway 403, to Southcote Road, south to Highway 53, west to Alberton Road and north to Jerseyville Road.

Population

In 2001 Fessenden 7 had a total population of 41,744 people, which was an increase of 21.6% since 1996. In 2001 the neighbourhood’s population was composed of 49.2% males and 50.8% females. Fessenden 7 had a higher proportion of children aged 19 and under than Hamilton and Ontario (Figure 1a). The proportion of individuals 65 years of age and over was slightly lower than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure 1b). A full population pyramid by age and sex for Fessenden 7 is shown in Figure 1c.

Marital Status and Families

In 2001 61.2% of the Fessenden 7 population aged 15 years and over were married compared to 51.7% in Hamilton and 53.4% in Ontario (Figure 2a). There were fewer lone parent families in Fessenden 7 (12.1%) than in Hamilton (16.6%) and Ontario (15.2%). Fewer seniors aged 65 years and over lived alone in Fessenden 7 (20.7%) compared to Hamilton (28.9%) and Ontario (26.8%). Fessenden 7 had more households with 4 or more members (39.3%) and fewer single person households (12.8%) than Hamilton and Ontario (Figure 2b).

Households and Dwellings

There were more owned and fewer rented dwellings in Fessenden 7 than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure 3a). Fessenden 7 is a newer community with 63.4% of private dwellings built between 1981 and 2001 compared to 23.7% for Hamilton and 31.9% for Ontario. There were very few apartment buildings in Fessenden 7 and more single-detached and row houses than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure 3b).

Education

The level of education in Fessenden 7 was slightly higher than in Hamilton and Ontario. Less-than-grade-9 was the highest level of education for 7.7% of adults 20 years of age and older, compared to 10.3% in Hamilton and 8.7% in Ontario (Figure 4a). In Fessenden 7 a higher proportion of adults had attained a college level of education than in Hamilton and Ontario. The proportion of people aged 15 to 24 years in Fessenden 7 who were not attending school was 32.1%, lower than in Hamilton (38.1%) and Ontario (35.1%).

Employment and Income

In Fessenden 7 a higher proportion of people aged 15 and over (68.1%) were in the labour force (working or available to work) than in Hamilton (63.7%) and similar to Ontario (67.3%). In 2001 Fessenden 7 had an unemployment rate (6.3%) that was similar to Hamilton’s (6.4%) and Ontario’s (6.1%). The top 4 male and female occupations are listed in Table 1. The prevalence of low income for all persons in private households was lower in Fessenden 7 (11.7%) than in Hamilton (19.8%) and Ontario (14.4%) (Figure 5a). Most areas of Hamilton, including Fessenden 7, experienced a decrease in low income since 1996. The average household income in Fessenden 7 was $69,600 in 2000, higher than Hamilton ($57,700) and Ontario ($66,800). In Fessenden 7, 80.5% of income came from employment while 9.7% came from government transfers. The proportions of income from employment and government transfers were 77.1% and 12.1%, respectively, for Hamilton and 78.7% and 9.8%, respectively, for Ontario.

Unpaid Work

Compared to Hamilton and Ontario, more people aged 15 years and over in Fessenden 7 provided unpaid childcare (Figure 6a). In addition, a higher proportion of people provided care or assistance to seniors compared to Hamilton and Ontario.

Immigration and Language

In Fessenden 7, 4.3% of people had a citizenship other than Canadian, compared with 6.0% in Hamilton and 7.6% in Ontario. Immigrants made up 24.8% of residents in Fessenden 7 with 16.0% of immigrants born in Italy, the most common place of birth outside Canada. In Hamilton and Ontario, 24.7% and 26.8% of residents were immigrants with the United Kingdom being the most common place of birth outside Canada. 5.3% of people in Fessenden 7 spoke a home language other than English or French, which was lower than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure 7a). Italian (1.1%) was the most common home language other than English in Fessenden 7. 1.4% of residents could not conduct a conversation in an official language (English or French) compared to 1.8% in Hamilton and 2.1% in Ontario.

Disability

In 2001 12.0% of people in Fessenden 7 reported difficulties hearing, seeing, communicating, walking, climbing stairs, bending, learning or doing similar activities. 13.5% of people reported that a physical condition, mental condition or health problem reduced the amount or kind of activity they could do. The percentage reporting one or both of the above disabilities was 15.8%. These rates were slightly lower than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure 8a).

HEALTH CARE UTILIZATION

Hospital Admissions and Emergency Room Visits

In 2001 and 2002, Fessenden 7 residents were admitted to hospital at a rate of 81.4 per 1,000 population, which was lower than in Hamilton as a whole (93.3) (Table 2). Fessenden 7 had a higher admission rate for osteoarthrosis and allied disorders than Hamilton but lower rates for all other disease groupings. The rate of emergency room visits and admissions was lower in Fessenden 7 than in Hamilton. Fessenden 7 residents had a lower rate of expected acute home care days per 1,000 population than residents of Hamilton as a whole.

Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) Services

In the fiscal year 2003-2004, the number of CCAC clients per 1,000 population in Fessenden 7 was 23.2, lower than in Hamilton as a whole (34.7) (Table 3). When standardized by age and sex to the Hamilton population, the rate for Fessenden 7 was still lower at 28.4 per 1,000. The standardized rates for individual CCAC services per 1,000 population were higher in Fessenden 7 than in the entire City of Hamilton for only Shift Nursing Hours and Personal Support and Homemaking Hours.
