LOCATION
This neighbourhood covers a western section of the old City of
Hamilton and an eastern section of the old Town of Ancaster. It
includes the smaller Hamilton City Planning and Development Department
neighbourhoods of Ainslie Wood, Mountview and Fessenden in the old
City of Hamilton and the neighbourhoods of Garner, Hamilton Golf
and Country Club, Old Mill, St. John’s , Lime Kiln, Scenic
Woods and Sulpher Springs in the old Town of Ancaster. Fessenden
8 is defined by census tracts 3.01, 3.02, 43, 44, 123 and 124. The
border of this neighbourhood follows Governor’s Road west,
then south along Binkley Side Road, Mineral Springs Road, Sulphur
Springs Road, Lover’s Lane and Fiddler’s Green Road
to Highway 53, east to Southcote Road, north to Highway 403 and
Golf Links Road, east along the Lincoln Alexander Parkway to Upper
Paradise, north to Mohawk Road, to Rice Ave., to San Pedro Drive,
to Scenic Drive and the escarpment. The border continues down the
escarpment along Highway 403 to Longwood Road and west along Main
Street to the border of the old Town of Dundas back to Governor’s
Road.

Population
In 2001 Fessenden 8 had a total population of 27,448 people, which
was an increase of 3.9% since 1996. In 2001 the neighbourhood’s
population was composed of 48.1% males and 51.9% females. Fessenden
8 had a lower proportion of young children aged 14 and under and
a higher proportion of individuals aged 15 to 29 than Hamilton and
Ontario (Figure
1a). The proportions of people in the age categories 65 and
over were fairly similar to Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
1b). A full population pyramid by age and sex for Fessenden
8 is shown in Figure 1c.
Marital Status and Families
In 2001 Fessenden 8 had a similar marital status distribution to
Hamilton and Ontario for the population aged 15 years and over (Figure
2a). There were slightly fewer lone parent families in Fessenden
8 (14.7%) than in Hamilton (16.6%) and Ontario (15.2%). A similar
proportion of seniors aged 65 years and over lived alone in Fessenden
8 (27.9%) compared to Hamilton (28.9%) and Ontario (26.8%). Fessenden
8 had slightly fewer households with 4 or more members (23.8%) and
more households with 2 members (33.5%) than Hamilton and Ontario
(Figure 2b).
Households and Dwellings
There were slightly fewer owned dwellings in Fessenden 8 than in
Hamilton and Ontario, and more rented (Figure
3a). Fessenden 8 had 70.8% of private dwellings built between
1946 and 1980 compared to 55.5% for Hamilton and 51.4% for Ontario.
There were slightly fewer single-detached houses in Fessenden 8
than in Hamilton and Ontario and more apartment buildings with five
or more storeys (Figure 3b).
Education
The level of education in Fessenden 8 was higher than in Hamilton
and Ontario. Less-than-grade-9 was the highest level of education
for 4.8% of the population 20 years and older, compared to 10.3%
in Hamilton and 8.7% in Ontario (Figure
4a). A much larger proportion of this population in Fessenden
8 attained a university level of education than in Hamilton and
Ontario. The proportion of people aged 15 to 24 years in Fessenden
8 who were not attending school was 28.7%, lower than in Hamilton
(38.1%) and Ontario (35.1%).
Employment and Income
In Fessenden 8 the proportion of people aged 15 and over (63.9%)
who were in the labour force (working or available to work) was
similar to Hamilton (63.7%) and lower than in Ontario (67.3%). In
2001 Fessenden 8 had a slightly lower unemployment rate (5.9%) than
Hamilton (6.4%) and Ontario (6.1%). The top 4 male and female occupations
are listed in Table
1. The prevalence of low income for all persons in private households
was lower in Fessenden 8 (16.9%) than in Hamilton (19.8%) but higher
than in Ontario (14.4%) (Figure
5a). Most areas of Hamilton experienced a decrease in low income
since 1996; however in Fessenden 8 the prevalence of low income
increased from 1996 to 2001. The average household income in Fessenden
8 was $69,400 in 2000, higher than in Hamilton ($57,700) and Ontario
($66,800). In Fessenden 8, 76.1% of income came from employment
while 9.4% came from government transfers. The proportions of income
from employment and government transfers were 77.1% and 12.1%, respectively,
for Hamilton and 78.7% and 9.8%, respectively, for Ontario.
Unpaid Work
Compared to Hamilton and Ontario, fewer people aged 15 years and
over in Fessenden 8 provided unpaid childcare (Figure
6a). A slightly greater proportion of people provided care or
assistance to seniors compared to Hamilton and Ontario.
Immigration and Language
In Fessenden 8, 8.4% of people had a citizenship other than Canadian,
compared with 6.0% in Hamilton and 7.6% in Ontario. Immigrants made
up 27.8% of residents in Fessenden 8 with 18.3% of immigrants born
in the United Kingdom, the most common place of birth outside Canada.
In Hamilton and Ontario, 24.7% and 26.8% of residents were immigrants
with the United Kingdom being the most common place of birth outside
Canada. 5.7% of people in Fessenden 8 spoke a home language other
than English or French, which was lower than in Hamilton and Ontario
(Figure 7a). Chinese (1.5%)
and Arabic (0.8%) were the two most common home languages other
than English in Fessenden 8. 0.9% of residents could not conduct
a conversation in an official language (English or French) compared
to 1.8% in Hamilton and 2.1% in Ontario.
Disability
In 2001 13.2% of people in Fessenden 8 reported difficulties hearing,
seeing, communicating, walking, climbing stairs, bending, learning
or doing similar activities. 14.6% of people reported that a physical
condition, mental condition or health problem reduced the amount
or kind of activity they could do. The percentage reporting one
or both of the above disabilities was 16.9%. These rates were slightly
lower than in Hamilton and about the same as in Ontario (Figure
8a).
HEALTH CARE UTILIZATION
Hospital Admissions and Emergency
Room Visits
In 2001 and 2002, Fessenden 8 residents were admitted to hospital
at a rate of 78.0 per 1,000 population, which was lower than in
Hamilton as a whole (93.3) (Table
2). Fessenden 8 had higher rates of admissions for malignancies
and osteoarthrosis and allied disorders than Hamilton but lower
rates for all other disease groupings. The rates of emergency room
visits, admissions and expected acute home care days per 1,000 population
were lower in Fessenden 8 than in Hamilton as a whole.
Community Care Access Centre (CCAC)
Services
In the fiscal year 2003-2004, the number of CCAC clients per 1,000
population in Fessenden 8 was 49.6, higher than in Hamilton as a
whole (34.7) (Table 3). When
standardized by age and sex to the Hamilton population, the rate
for Fessenden 8 remained high at 46.7 per 1,000. Except for Speech
Visits, the standardized rates for individual CCAC services per
1,000 population were higher in Fessenden 8 than in the entire City
of Hamilton.
