LOCATION

This neighbourhood is a section of east Hamilton. It includes the smaller Hamilton City Planning and Development Department neighbourhoods of Delta, Bartonville, Glenview, Rosedale, Lower King’s Forest and Red Hill. McQuesten 13 is defined by census tracts 25, 26.05 and 27-31. The border of this neighbourhood follows Gage Avenue south from Main Street to the escarpment, following the escarpment around the King’s Forest Park area and back to King Street just east of Mount Albion Road, west to the Red Hill Valley, north to Queenston Road and west back to Main Street.

Population

In 2001 McQuesten 13 had a total population of 21,975 people, which was virtually unchanged from 1996. In 2001 the neighbourhood’s population was composed of 47.8% males and 52.2% females. McQuesten 13 had a slightly older age distribution than Hamilton and Ontario (Figure 1a), with lower a proportion of individuals under 35 years of age and a higher proportion of individuals 60 years of age and over (Figure 1b). A full population pyramid by age and sex for McQuesten 13 is shown in Figure 1c.

Marital Status and Families

In 2001 McQuesten 13 had slightly fewer single people aged 15 years and over and slightly more separated, divorced and widowed people than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure 2a). There were more lone parent families in McQuesten 13 (20.9%) than in Hamilton (16.6%) and Ontario (15.2%). Slightly more seniors aged 65 years and over lived alone in McQuesten 13 (29.4%) than in Hamilton (28.9%) and Ontario (26.8%). McQuesten 13 had more households with 2 members (34.7%) and fewer households with 4 or more members (21.7%) than Hamilton and Ontario (Figure 2b).

Households and Dwellings

There were more owned and fewer rented private dwellings in McQuesten 13 than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure 3a). McQuesten 13 is an older neighbourhood with more dwellings built prior to 1961 (69.1%) than Hamilton (42.6%) and Ontario (33.1%). There were more single-detached houses in McQuesten 13 than in Hamilton and Ontario, and fewer apartment buildings with five or more storeys (Figure 3b).

Education

The level of education in McQuesten 13 was lower than in Hamilton and Ontario. Less-than-grade-9 was the highest level of education for 12.8% of the population 20 years and older, compared to 10.3% in Hamilton and 8.7% in Ontario (Figure 4a). The proportion of people aged 15 to 24 years in McQuesten 13 who were not attending school was 44.0%, higher than in Hamilton (38.1%) and Ontario (35.1%).

Employment and Income

In McQuesten 13 a lower proportion of people aged 15 and over (61.9%) were in the labour force (working or available to work) than in Hamilton (63.7%) and Ontario (67.3%). In 2001 McQuesten 13 had a similar unemployment rate (6.2%) to Hamilton (6.4%) and Ontario (6.1%). The top 4 male and female occupations are listed in Table 1. The prevalence of low income for all persons in private households (19.1%) was similar to Hamilton (19.8%), higher than Ontario (14.4%) (Figure 5a). Most areas of Hamilton experienced a decrease in low income since 1996; however, in McQuesten 13 the prevalence of low income increased from 1996 to 2001. The average household income in McQuesten 13 was $52,300 in 2000, lower than Hamilton ($57,700) and Ontario ($66,800). In McQuesten 13, 73.3% of income came from employment while 15.1% came from government transfers. The proportions of income from employment and government transfers were 77.1% and 12.1%, respectively, for Hamilton and 78.7% and 9.8%, respectively, for Ontario.

Unpaid Work

Compared to Hamilton and Ontario, slightly fewer people aged 15 years and over in McQuesten 13 provided unpaid childcare (Figure 6a). A slightly lower proportion of people provided care or assistance to seniors compared to Hamilton and Ontario.

Immigration and Language

In McQuesten 13, 2.8% of people had a citizenship other than Canadian, compared with 6.0% in Hamilton and 7.6% in Ontario. Immigrants made up 22.2% of residents in McQuesten 13 with 19.2% of immigrants born in the United Kingdom, the most common place of birth outside Canada. In Hamilton and Ontario, 24.7% and 26.8% of residents were immigrants with the United Kingdom being the most common place of birth outside Canada. 5.4% of people in McQuesten 13 spoke a home language other than English or French, which was lower than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure 7a). Italian (1.2%) and Polish (1.0%) were the two most common home languages other than English in McQuesten 13. 1.3% of residents could not conduct a conversation in an official language (English or French) compared to 1.8% in Hamilton and 2.1% in Ontario.

Disability

In 2001 17.5% of people in McQuesten 13 reported difficulties hearing, seeing, communicating, walking, climbing stairs, bending, learning or doing similar activities. 19.2% of people reported that a physical condition, mental condition or health problem reduced the amount or kind of activity they could do. The percentage reporting one or both of the above disabilities was 21.8%. These rates were higher than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure 8a).

HEALTH CARE UTILIZATION

Hospital Admissions and Emergency Room Visits

In 2001 and 2002, McQuesten 13 residents were admitted to hospital at a rate of 99.5 per 1,000 population, which was higher than in Hamilton as a whole (93.3) (Table 2). McQuesten 13 had higher rates of admission than Hamilton for all disease groupings except pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The rates of emergency room visits and admissions were higher in McQuesten 13 than in Hamilton. McQuesten 13 residents also had a higher rate of expected acute home care days per 1,000 population than residents of Hamilton as a whole.

Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) Services

In the fiscal year 2003-2004, the number of CCAC clients per 1,000 population in McQuesten 13 was 36.2, higher than in Hamilton as a whole (34.7) (Table 3). When standardized by age and sex to the Hamilton population, the rate for McQuesten 13 was lower than Hamilton at 31.8 per 1,000. Except for Shift Nursing Hours and Speech Visits, the standardized rates for individual CCAC services per 1,000 population were lower in McQuesten 13 than in the entire City of Hamilton.
