LOCATION
This neighbourhood covers the southeast section of the old City
of Hamilton, the old City of Stoney Creek above the escarpment,
and the eastern section of the old Town of Glanbrook. Valley Park
5 is defined by census tracts 1.01-1.03, 80.01, 80.03-80.05, 81
and 100. It includes the smaller Hamilton City Planning and Development
Department neighbourhoods of Albion Falls, Hannon, Rymal, Trenholme,
Templemead, Broughton, Eleanor, Butler, Chappel, Allison, Green
Fields and Valley Park. The area in Glanbrook includes Mount Albion,
Tapleytown, Elfrida, Woodburn, Binbrook and extends south to Blackheath
and Sinclairville. The border of this neighbourhood follows (counter-clockwise)
the escarpment in Stoney Creek to Limeridge Road, west to Upper
Ottawa Street, south to Stone Church Road, west to Upper Wentworth
Street, south to Rymal Road, west to Upper James Street, south to
the border of old Town of Glanbrook, east to Trinity Church Road,
south to Haldibrook Road, east to Westbrook Road, north to South
Townline Road, east to the Grimsby municipal border, and north to
the escarpment. There is a small area included in this neighbourhood
below the escarpment (census tract 81) between Gray Road and Centennial
Parkway, north of King Street.

Population
In 2001 Valley Park 5 had a total population of 40,154 people,
an increase of 11.4% since 1996. In 2001 the neighbourhood’s
population was composed of 49.1% males and 50.9% females. Valley
Park 5 had a much younger population than Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
1a). There was a very large proportion of children aged 0 to
19 years as well as a large proportion of adults aged 30 to 44 years.
There were proportionally fewer individuals 65 years of age and
over (Figure
1b). A full population pyramid by age and sex for Valley Park
5 is shown in Figure 1c.
Marital Status and Families
In 2001 60.5% of the Valley Park 5 population aged 15 years and
over were married compared to 51.7% in Hamilton and 53.4% in Ontario
(Figure 2a).
There were fewer lone parent families in Valley Park 5 (13.6%) than
in Hamilton (16.6%) and Ontario (15.2%). Fewer seniors aged 65 years
and over lived alone in Valley Park 5 (22.7%) compared to Hamilton
(28.9%) and Ontario (26.8%). Valley Park 5 had large household sizes.
There were more households with 4 or more members (42.0%) and fewer
single person households (11.9%) than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
2b).
Households and Dwellings
There were more owned and fewer rented dwellings in Valley Park
5 than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
3a). Valley Park 5 is a newer community with 59.8% of private
dwellings built in the period of 1981 to 2001 compared to 23.7%
for Hamilton and 31.9% for Ontario. There were more single-detached
and row houses and fewer apartment buildings in Valley Park 5 than
in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
3b).
Education
The level of education in Valley Park 5 was similar to Hamilton
and Ontario. Valley Park 5 had a higher proportion of people whose
highest level of education was a trades certificate or diploma or
any college level while a smaller proportion had less-than-grade-9
or any university as their highest level of education (Figure
4a). The proportion of people aged 15 to 24 years in Valley
Park 5 who were not attending school was 34.4%, slightly lower than
in Hamilton (38.1%) and Ontario (35.1%).
Employment and Income
In Valley Park 5 a higher proportion of people aged 15 and over
(73.5%) were in the labour force (working or available to work)
than in Hamilton (63.7%) and Ontario (67.3%). In 2001 Valley Park
5 had a lower unemployment rate (5.4%) than Hamilton (6.4%) and
Ontario (6.1%). The top 4 male and female occupations are listed
in Table 1.
The prevalence of low income for all persons in private households
was lower in Valley Park 5 (11.9%) than in Hamilton (19.8%) and
Ontario (14.4%) (Figure 5a).
Most areas of Hamilton, including Valley Park 5, experienced a decrease
in low income since 1996. The average household income in Valley
Park 5 was $71,400 in 2000, higher than in Hamilton ($57,700) and
Ontario ($66,800). In Valley Park 5, 84.7% of income came from employment
while 8.1% came from government transfers. The proportions of income
from employment and government transfers were 77.1% and 12.1%, respectively,
for Hamilton and 78.7% and 9.8%, respectively, for Ontario.
Unpaid Work
Compared to Hamilton and Ontario, more people aged 15 years and
over in Valley Park 5 provided unpaid childcare (Figure
6a). A slightly greater proportion of people provided care of
assistance to seniors compared to Hamilton and Ontario.
Immigration and Language
In Valley Park 5, 3.6% of people had a citizenship other than Canadian,
compared with 6.0% in Hamilton and 7.6% in Ontario. Immigrants made
up 21.8% of residents in Valley Park 5 with 16.8% of immigrants
born in the United Kingdom and 16.0% born in Italy, the two most
common places of birth outside Canada. In Hamilton and Ontario,
24.7% and 26.8% of residents were immigrants with the United Kingdom
being the most common place of birth outside Canada. 4.6% of people
in Valley Park 5 spoke a home language other than English or French,
which was lower than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
7a). Polish (0.7%) was the most common home language other than
English in Valley Park 5. 0.9% of residents could not conduct a
conversation in an official language (English or French) compared
to 1.8% in Hamilton and 2.1% in Ontario.
Disability
In 2001 10.1% of people in Valley Park 5 reported difficulties
hearing, seeing, communicating, walking, climbing stairs, bending,
learning or doing similar activities. 11.6% of people reported that
a physical condition, mental condition or health problem reduced
the amount or kind of activity they could do. The percentage reporting
one or both of the above disabilities was 13.6%. These rates were
lower than in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
8a).
HEALTH CARE UTILIZATION
Hospital Admissions and Emergency
Room Visits
In 2001 and 2002, Valley Park 5 residents were admitted to hospital
at a rate of 80.8 per 1,000 population, lower than in Hamilton as
a whole (93.3) (Table 2). Valley
Park 5 had lower rates for all disease groupings. The rate of emergency
room visits was higher in Valley Park 5 than in Hamilton; however,
emergency room admissions were lower. Valley Park 5 residents had
a lower rate of expected acute home care days per 1,000 population
than residents of Hamilton as a whole.
Community Care Access Centre (CCAC)
Services
In the fiscal year 2003-2004, the number of CCAC clients per 1,000
population in Valley Park 5 was 31.9, lower than in Hamilton as
a whole (34.7) (Table 3). When
standardized by age and sex to the Hamilton population, the rate
for Valley Park 5 was 46.3 per 1,000, much higher than the Hamilton
rate. All CCAC services except Shift Nursing Hours and Speech Visits
were used at a higher rate in Valley Park 5 than in the entire City
of Hamilton when standardized.
