LOCATION
This neighbourhood is a section of the west Hamilton mountain.
It includes the smaller Hamilton City Planning and Development Department
neighbourhoods of Macassa, Hampton Heights, Huntington, Thorner,
Lawfield, Berrisfield, Lisgar, Upper King’s Forest, Rushdale,
Randall and Quinndale. Valley Park 6 is defined by census tracts
1.06, 1.07, 5.01-5.03, and 6-8. The border of Valley Park 6 follows
Fennell Ave. west to Upper Sherman Ave., south to Mohawk Road, west
to Upper Wentworth Street, south to Stone Church Road, east to Upper
Ottawa Street, north to Limeridge Road, east to the escarpment and
north back to Fennell Ave.

Population
In 2001 Valley Park 6 had a total population of 34,295 people,
which was virtually unchanged since 1996. In 2001 the neighbourhood’s
population was composed of 47.6% males and 52.4% females. Valley
Park 6 had a similar age distribution (Figure
1a) to Hamilton and Ontario, except for slightly increased proportions
of individuals aged 10 to 19 and 60 to 79 (Figure
1b). A full population pyramid by age and sex for Valley Park
6 is shown in Figure 1c.
Marital Status and Families
In 2001 the residents, aged 15 years and over, of Valley Park 6
had a similar marital status distribution to Hamilton and Ontario
with 53.8% of the population married compared to 51.7% in Hamilton
and 53.4% in Ontario (Figure
2a). There was a slightly higher proportion of lone parent families
in Valley Park 6 (17.3%) than in Hamilton (16.6%) and Ontario (15.2%).
Valley Park 6 had 29.7% of seniors living alone, while in Hamilton
and Ontario the percent of seniors living alone was 28.9% and 26.8%,
respectively. Valley Park 6 also had a similar distribution of household
sizes to Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
2b).
Households and Dwellings
There were about the same proportion of owned and rented dwellings
in Valley Park 6 as in Hamilton and Ontario (Figure
3a). In Valley Park 6, 63.6% of private dwellings were built
between 1961 to 1990 compared to 46.9% for Hamilton and 52.5% for
Ontario. There were fewer apartment buildings in Valley Park 6 than
in Hamilton and Ontario and more row houses (Figure
3b).
Education
Less-than-grade-9 was the highest level of education for 11.7%
of the Valley Park 6 population 20 years and older, compared to
10.3% in Hamilton and 8.7% in Ontario, while 12.9% attained any
university level compared to 20.2% for Hamilton and 26.3% for Ontario
(Figure 4a). The proportion
of people aged 15 to 24 years in Valley Park 6 who were not attending
school was 37.9% compared to 38.1% in Hamilton and 35.1% in Ontario.
Employment and Income
In Valley Park 6 62.0% of people aged 15 and over were in the labour
force (working or available to work) compared to 63.7% in Hamilton
and 67.3% in Ontario. In 2001 Valley Park 6 had a slightly higher
unemployment rate (6.8%) than Hamilton (6.4%) and Ontario (6.1%).
The top 4 male and female occupations are listed in Table
1. The proportion of people with low income was about the same
in Valley Park 6 (20.3%) as in Hamilton (19.8%) and higher than
in Ontario (14.4%) (Figure 5a).
Most areas of Hamilton, including Valley Park 6, experienced a decrease
in low income since 1996. The average household income in Valley
Park 6 was $54,900 in 2000, lower than Hamilton ($57,700) and Ontario
($66,800). In Valley Park 6, 75.1% of income came from employment
while 14.1% came from government transfers. The proportions of income
from employment and government transfers were 77.1% and 12.1%, respectively,
for Hamilton and 78.7% and 9.8%, respectively, for Ontario.
Unpaid Work
Compared to Hamilton and Ontario, more people aged 15 years and
over provided unpaid childcare (Figure
6a). In addition, more people provided care or assistance to
seniors compared to Hamilton and Ontario.
Immigration and Language
In Valley Park 6, 5.3% of people had a citizenship other than Canadian,
compared with 6.0% in Hamilton and 7.6% in Ontario. Immigrants made
up 26.0% of residents in Valley Park 6 with 16.6% of immigrants
born in the United Kingdom, the most common place of birth outside
Canada. In Hamilton and Ontario, 24.7% and 26.8% of residents were
immigrants with the United Kingdom again being the most common place
of birth outside Canada. 7.0% of people in Valley Park 6 spoke a
home language other than English or French, which was similar to
Hamilton and lower than in Ontario (Figure
7a). Italian (1.0%) was the most common home language other
than English in Valley Park 6. 1.5% of residents could not conduct
a conversation in an official language (English or French) compared
to 1.8% in Hamilton and 2.1% in Ontario.
Disability
In 2001 15.0% of people in Valley Park 6 reported difficulties
hearing, seeing, communicating, walking, climbing stairs, bending,
learning or doing similar activities. 17.4% of people reported that
a physical condition, mental condition or health problem reduced
the amount or kind of activity they could do. The percentage reporting
one or both of the above disabilities was 19.9%. These rates were
about the same as in Hamilton, and higher than in Ontario (Figure
8a).
HEALTH CARE UTILIZATION
Hospital Admissions and Emergency
Room Visits
In 2001 and 2002, Valley Park 6 residents were admitted to hospital
at a rate of 95.7 per 1,000 population, which was slightly higher
than in Hamilton as a whole (93.3) (Table
2). Valley Park 6 had higher rates of admissions for malignancies,
pneumonia, osteoarthrosis and allied disorders, and circulatory
disorders than Hamilton. Valley Park 6 also had higher expected
acute home care days. The rates of emergency room visits and admissions
were lower than in Hamilton.
Community Care Access Centre (CCAC)
Services
In the fiscal year 2003-2004, the number of CCAC clients per 1,000
population in Valley Park 6 was 37.5, higher than in Hamilton as
a whole (34.7) (Table 3). When
standardized by age and sex to the Hamilton population, the rate
for Valley Park 6 was similar to Hamilton’s rate at 35.1 per
1,000. Nursing Visits, Social Work and Nutrition were the only standardized
rates for individual CCAC services that were higher than in Hamilton
as a whole.
